Sol Polinsky was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1930. His background is in chemical engineering. For 35 years he worked in the chemical industry, inventing processes to make novel materials (he has over 100 patents). About 30 years ago he became fascinated with an old Russian jewelry craft - filigree. He started experimenting with it and soon making filigree jewelry became his love. Over the years, he perfected his technique and became well known in Moscow for his complex 3D designs and their flawless implementation. It took some time for Sol to recreate his filigree shop after emigrating to the U.S., but now filigree is all he does. Filigree is 100% handwork. Each product is a unique masterpiece that cannot be reproduced, even by its creator. People who buy these items can be sure they are getting a unique product that nobody else will have. Filigree articles are made of pure or high-standard grades of gold or silver that are soft enough to be drawn into a very fine wire. This wire is then bent, twisted, and curled to create lace-like surfaces with unique patterns. It takes a long time as well as tremendous patience, attention and precision to make a piece of filigree jewelry.
